September is approaching and this is normally the time of year when we would be resuming our Argentine Tango classes after the summer break. As the lockdown has eased and some restrictions have been lifted we have had a number of enquiries asking if we are planning to teach tango again this autumn. There have also been a couple of enquiries regarding social dancing and when this might commence again.

Of course we miss our regular dancers and we know that many of you miss tango very much, not just the dancing but also the social interaction with your dancing friends. We have given the matter careful consideration in the light of guidance from the IDTA (International Dance Teachers Association) and The British Dance Council. We have also taken on board the requirements of the committees running the venues where we would normally hold our events.

Our number one priority is for the health of our dancers, and consequently it is with regret that we have decided not to run classes this autumn. Argentine Tango is a close partner dance, and in our opinion poses too many health risks given the situation with the current pandemic, especially as another spike is considered likely as winter approaches..

With regard to social dancing, we like to feel that we create something special with our milongas, a place where everyone, no matter what the level of their dance, can feel comfortable and enjoy the dance, the tea and cakes, and of course the company of friends and fellow dancers. For us the idea of wearing masks while dancing, staying at a fixed distance from our friends and fellow dancers, and not being able to enjoy a conversation over a cup of tea and a slice of cake is not what tango is about. The soul of the dance would be missing for us. Although it may be possible to compromise this is not something we would be happy to do, so unfortunately social dancing with Westcourt Tango for the time being will remain a hope for the future.

We hope that you understand that your health is a priority for us, and that we want your dance experience with Westcourt Tango to be the best that we can provide. We will of course review the situation as the outlook with regard to Covid 19 changes in the future.

In the meantime, thank you for all your messages. Stay safe,

Best wishes
Christine and Adrian
